Final Cut Pro and Blender

Posted in Professional Project on 26/04/2010 by Tim Bradley

Rachael, Asher and myself filmed some footage around college containing every colour of the rainbow. This included posters, signs and books in the library.
The footage is to be edited using Final Cut Pro. This is professional standard video editing software from Apple. It only works on Macs – not Windows pcs.
I did not get this finished in class so I had to do it at home. The challenge is to find software of a similar standard which works on Windows and is free. I have chosen Blender.
Blender is better known as a 3D animation package but according to Wikipedia it also contains a professional standard video editor. It works on Windows and it is free!
I watched some tutorials on Youtube and then edited the Rainbow footage. You can edit an individual frame and even export it as a JPEG. I did have a problem rendering the sound. I tried many times doing exactly the same as the tutorials but I always ended up with a silent film! I may have to reinstall the software. It was not an insurmountable problem this time because I was adding a piece of backing music. I added it to the rendered film in Windows Movie Maker. After editing in Blender I rendered in AVI format. This can be read by Windows Movie Maker, Windows Media Player and QuickTime. After adding the soundtrack in Windows Movie Maker I rendered in DV-AVI format. This can be read by both Windows Media player and QuickTime. It can therefore be viewed on both macs and pcs.

Photographing Magic

Posted in Professional Project on 06/01/2010 by Tim Bradley

We were divided into groups of 4. We  were told to think of up to 6 ideas and film 3 of them. We thought of 5. the 2 rejected ideas were both mine. The first was to have somebody as a ghost and somebody to walk through them. The other was to photograph all 4 faces, put them into layers, peel a corner to reveal another face etc. These ideas were rejected as too difficult.
All photos wre stills and were sequenced using iMovie HD. We photographed Christian in rapid succession jumping off a wall including a twist. The picture sequence was reversed and speeded up to give the appearance of jumping onto the wall. 3 of the group were photograped at short intervals shuffling along the corridor. The sequence was speeded up and a soundtrack of racing cars was added. The final idea was a magic bag. We photographed an empty camera bag and then a lot of items being taken out of it. We reversed and speeded up the sequence to give the illusion of all the items going into the bag and disappearing.
The 3 sequences were combined and called Illusions. Here is the Youtube link.

Little People

We looked at he following website

http://little-people.blogspot.com/

We then took some photos ourselves. Here are some examples

Seesmic tv

We were asked to create an account on Seesmic tv. This was easily done. We were asked to contribute to one of the online conversations or start a new one. Unfortunately none seemed very appealing. As an example one lady was describing her sinus problems. I could not think of anything to say to any of these people!

Group Advert

The group is called Nicoteam. The members are Chloe, Christian, Dan and myself.

We decided to make an anti smoking ad. We looked at various Youtube videos and anti smoking sites. Links to these are contained in

Youtube Smoking

We produced a storyboard and made our pitch.

The feedback to our pitch was generally negative. Smokers said shock tactics don’t work. They actually smoke more in defiance. It was suggested we promote positive qualities about quitting smoking.

We accepted the criticisms and produced a new storyboard from which the final film was produced.

The finished film together with outtakes and both storyboards have been submitted by the group.
